Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down below the soil line and leaves the roots in the ground to decay. Stump removal, also called extraction, pulls out the stump and its major roots. Grinding usually costs less and leaves a small, shallow hole, which is why most Wilmington homeowners who just want lawn back choose it. Extraction costs more and leaves a bigger hole, but it clears the main roots from that spot. In Wilmington, published cost guides put the averages at about $298 for grinding and $331 for removal.

How stump grinding works

A stump grinder has a spinning cutting wheel with teeth. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump, cutting away wood a little at a time until the stump is below grade. What's left is a pile of wood chips mixed with soil and a shallow depression where the stump was. The root system stays underground and breaks down over time.

How deep the grinder goes is the detail that matters most later. There is no extension-service standard for depth. Ask for the grinding depth in writing; 4–6 inches is common for grass, deeper if you'll plant or build. If you want to put a flower bed, a new tree or a paver patio there, say so before the quote, because deeper grinding takes longer.

How stump removal (extraction) works

Extraction digs out and pulls the stump with its main roots attached. It is more work, often needs heavier equipment, and leaves a larger hole to backfill. In exchange, you remove most of the woody mass instead of waiting for it to rot. People tend to consider extraction when they plan to build, set a foundation or dig in that exact spot.

Cost: grinding vs removal side by side

These are typical ranges from published cost guides (2025–2026) — estimates, not quotes. Wilmington averages come from a published Wilmington cost guide; national figures from a national stump grinding cost guide.

A worked grinding example

Say you have one 30-inch stump and two smaller ones. At $2–$5 per inch, the first stump works out to $60–$150, but with a minimum around $100 the realistic floor is $100, so call it $100–$150. Two extra stumps at about $37–$70 each add $74–$140. Total: roughly $174–$290 before cleanup or haul-away. A single 15-inch stump ($30–$75 by the inch) would likely hit the minimum, about $100. Your quote depends on size, access and cleanup. The Wilmington cost guide and calculator runs the same math.

What drives the price up

  • Diameter. Measure across the top of the stump at its widest, including any root flare the company will grind.
  • Depth. Grinding 10 inches down takes longer than 4.
  • Access. Gates, fences, slopes and stumps tight against a house or driveway take more time.
  • Cleanup. Raking chips into the hole is different from hauling them away and backfilling with topsoil.
  • Extraction itself, which costs more than grinding in every guide we found.

Chips, debris and haul-away in Wilmington

Grinding leaves a mound of chips that can be bigger than you expect. Some homeowners keep them as mulch; others want them gone. Decide before the quote, because it changes the price.

Don't count on the city to take what's left. Under the City of Wilmington yard waste rules, city crews don't pick up stumps or root balls, and yard waste created by commercial contractors may not be collected. Palm trunks aren't collected either. Make sure your quote includes haul-away if you don't want to deal with the debris yourself. Outside the city, unincorporated New Hanover and Pender counties have no routine curbside yard pickup.

Replanting where a stump was

If you want grass, 4–6 inches of grinding and some fresh topsoil is the usual approach. If you want a new tree in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding or consider planting a few feet away. Also think about the site: NC State Extension in Pender County advises against large trees where the water table is within 18 inches of the surface, because roots stay shallow and windthrow risk goes up. Much of the area has wet, sandy soils, so a spot where a pine blew over may not suit another big tree. For species ideas, see wind-resistant trees for coastal NC.

Utility lines come first

Both grinding and extraction go below the soil. Before stump grinding, the company should submit an NC 811 locate request at least three full working days ahead (G.S. 87-122). Ask them to confirm they have. Our post on calling 811 before stump grinding explains why.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose grinding if you want lawn or mulch back, want to keep cost down, or have several stumps.
  • Ask about extraction if you are building, pouring a slab or digging in that spot, and get both prices.
  • Bundle it with the tree job if a tree is still standing. Many companies quote tree removal and grinding together.

Before you hire, ask the company for:

  • A certificate of general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
  • Whether an ISA Certified Arborist is on staff (a private credential from the International Society of Arboriculture, not a state license; verify at treesaregood.org).
  • Whether the company is TCIA Accredited (a private Tree Care Industry Association program).
  • An NC commercial pesticide applicator license (Ornamental & Turf category) if they will spray or inject.
  • A written quote that states cleanup, haul-away, stump grinding depth and whether a permit is included.
